Rev. Gordon Williams, Evangelist

"Father’s Day” arrives on June 16! This is an opportunity to honor our fathers. It is also a time to honor our Heavenly Father. For He sets the example of what us human fathers are supposed to be like. He is the "Model Father”. And, He does not want us to use any human Mentors because He has appointed the perfect Mentor who is the Holy Spirit and who has been given the responsibility to "transform” all of His people into the image of Jesus Christ our Saviour (Rom 12: 1 - 8; 1 Cor. 12: 8 - 10; Gal. 5: 22 - 23).

He cannot entrust such a great responsibility to anybody else. Every family in the world is "dysfunctional” because we have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God” (Rom. 3: 23). It is only after we have had the experience of having our sins forgiven and received the Baptism of the Holy Spirit with the proof (Mk. 16: 17 - 20; Acts 2: 4) that we can become "non-dysfunctional” and have families that are being "changed into his (God’s’) likeness” from glory to glory (2 Cor. 3: 17 - 18).
So, our perfect "Role Model” as a father is God our Heavenly Father. It has become the custom in many churches to appoint human "mentors” to help people grow as believers. Because many people have had human fathers who were abusive, the excuse is that calling God, our Father, is frightening to people who have experienced abusive fathers. This is nonsense! There is only one Perfect Father Who is God. And, to replace Him with some well-meaning but inadequate human father or mother is to limit new Christians to somebody else’s limited experience with our God who loves us, saves us and gives us His Holy Spirit to be our appointed Mentor and Counsellor (Jn. 14: 26; 16: 7 - 15).
Such well-meaning people cannot see their own spiritual inadequacies and lack of Biblical understanding that they poison those people whom they are attempting to mentor and take the place of the Holy Spirit. As the Head of the Family of God, our Heavenly Father "so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life” (Jn. 3: 16). The Mentoring of us Christians can only be done successfully by the Holy Spirit.
And it is the Holy Spirit who shapes us earthly fathers so we can have Spirit-led non-dysfunctional families who are also a part of the "Family of God” (Jn. 1: 12; 11: 52; Rom. 8: 16). And, we all need to learn to seek the Holy Spirit’s guidance every day (Eph. 6: 18; Rev. 2: 7, 11, 17, 29; 3: 6, 13, 22). So, please, pray for your earthly husbands and fathers that we can be more like our Heavenly Father (Matt. 5: 48), Jesus our Saviour & Brother (Matt. 12: 49 - 50) and the Holy Spirit, our Counsellor (Matt. 28: 19). Happy Father’s Day!

Yours in Jesus,

Rev. Gordon Williams
