"I am the good shepherd; and I know My sheep, and am known by My own. As the Father knows Me, even so I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep. And other sheep I have which are not of this fold; them also I must bring, and they will hear My voice; and there will be one flock and one shepherd." (John 10:14-16)
Jesus has a calling on all His people, not only His sheep, but lost sheep as well. A veterinarian once told me that after sheep were sheered or fleeced for wool, they can't recognize each other until their new wool grows in.
That is what happens when a person is "born again" and "Baptized with the Holy Spirit." It is difficult for people to recognize themselves because of the changes the Holy Spirit makes in peoples' habits by increasing the "fruit of the Spirit" within them - love, peace, joy and kindness (Gal. 5:22-23).
