Many are afraid. Until people have personally experienced the ministry of the Holy Spirit, they are often apprehensive - and rightly so, because the Pentecostal experience of the baptism in the Holy Spirit has occasionally been characterized by wacky antics passing for "the anointing".
Some conclude that the lack of operation of the gifts of the Holy Spirit in one's own church is proof that God no longer distributes the gifts to His people - that they are simply not in use today.
Others flatly reject interest in the gifts, proclaiming their preference for the fruit of the Spirit, as though Scripture holds a Chinese menu from which we can select or reject its offerings according to our own wisdom. They don't seem to understand that without the empowerment of the Holy Spirit, the development of the character of Jesus, known as the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23), is an uphill struggle, while it happens effortlessly when one cooperates with Him.
And then there are those who believe that the Holy Spirit was given by Jesus to empower His children to do His work on Earth until His return. Seeing the Lord respond to their desire to be totally immersed in His Person for His service is one of the most thrilling aspects of my ministry.
