"The jar of meal was not spent, neither did the cruse of oil fail..." (1 Kings 17:8-16).
It is not always easy to trust the Lord God, especially when we have run out of money and almost out of food. This was the situation in which the widow of Zarephath found herself. Elijah asked her for something to eat, but she barely had enough flour and oil to feed her son and herself, let alone Elijah.
They were going to eat the little they had left and die; but Elijah asked her to trust God and give him the last of her food. He sounded selfish but he wasn't. He was teaching her the lesson that we all need to learn; do what God says and you will never run out.
"Give and it will be given to you; good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For the measure you give will be the measure you get back" (Luke 6:38).
Elijah told the widow that God said, "The jar of meal shall not be spent, and the cruse of oil shall not fail, until the day that the Lord sends rain upon the earth." In faith, she fed the prophet.
The flour and oil are symbols of Jesus and the Holy Spirit. They never run dry. God is still Jehovah-Jireh, our Provider and when we do what Jesus tells us, He will meet all of our needs until He comes again.
Prayer
Holy Spirit, please always remind me that God's flour and Your oil will never run dry. Amen.
