Praying in Tongues breaks the Smoking Habit! Smoking in Tongues At a "Full Gospel Business Men’s Fellowship" (F.G. B. M. F. I.) meeting in Toronto, Ontario, a man named Joe came for prayer. He explained, “I'm a Christian, baptized with the Holy Spirit, and when I was saved, the Lord took away my drinking problem, but I still have a smoking problem... And I just can’t stop.” “Do you speak in tongues everyday?" I asked. “No, not really,” he answered. I explained to him that the reason he was having this problem was that it was an attempt by his physical body (flesh), to quench his "hunger and thirst for

Do you think God will heal me? I am continually being asked, "Does Jesus heal people today?” My answer is "Absolutely, ‘Yes!” But for many church members and clergy, the answer is "no” because they are "religious people” who have never received Salvation and the Baptism of the Holy Spirit (Jn 3:3, 5, 7). They do not accept the New Testament with God’s promises of being able to "prosper and be in good health” (3 Jn. 1:2). There is no question that God uses doctors to heal people today. People have not been told that Jesus heals today because there is no "healing ministry”

Whosoever, called upon the Lord and Received! I asked a woman in her forties, “Do you want to receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit?” She answered, “I've had prayer many times, but I was told by my pastor that there is a time for everything, and it was not my time to receive (Ecc. 3).  I answered, “But yes, it is your time!” She asked, “How does one know?” I answered, "Because Peter said on the Day of Pentecost, 'And it shall be that whosoever calls on the name of the Lord will be saved…..and receive the gift of the Holy Spirit'” (Acts 2:21, 38).  I pointed out

Surrender your Pain to Jesus! At the Gathering Place, Portage la Prairie, Manitoba a women shared with me all the anxiety she felt as the result of her divorce; and even after she had remarried, the anxiety persisted. She anguished over the pain that her children and ex-husband were carrying, even though he too was also remarried.   I told to her that they were no longer her responsibility, and that she needed to let go; giving them over to Jesus to deal with. She had already received the baptism of the Holy Spirit.  “But, I have already done that!” she sobbed. I reasoned with her that she in fact had

Why Do We Need The Baptism In The Holy Spirit? We need God's power for effective service and ministry towards others - especially those who are called to be Evangelists, Pastors, Christian teachers and leaders. When Jesus gave His Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20), He knew that His disciples could not fulfill it in their own power. Therefore, He had a special plan to give them the same power that He had - the power of the Holy Spirit. Just after Jesus gave His disciples the Great Commission, He commanded them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for what the Father promised, "which," He said, "you heard of from Me; for John

Is the Husband the Head of the Household? The Apostle Paul said, "...the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Saviour" (Eph. 5:23). Paul is saying that like Jesus, with His bride (the church), it is the husband's responsibility to make certain that his family, including himself, knows Jesus Christ as their Saviour and Lord; and receive the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. The role of the husband is not the boss who has the last word on everything, but he is the one responsible to help guide his family in a right relationship with Jesus. Jesus is our boss and one we

Mother's Day Tribute: Honor your Mother "Mother’s Day” arrives on May 14th this year. It is a day when opportunity is given to honour wives and mothers. We are commanded in the Scriptures:  "Husbands love (agape) your wives just as Christ loved (agape) loved the church and gave Himself for her to make her holy .....and blameless” (Eph. 5:25-27). He who loves his wife loves (agape) himself (1 Cor. 7: 4).  There are four different Greek words for "love”: The first is friendship (philos), the second, eros (sexual), the third, family (Storge) and the fourth, agape (God's love). The first three are

Sharing Praise Reports Encourages Others. "Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do. (Thessalonians 5:11)"  "And let us continue to consider how to motivate one another to love and good deeds, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another even more as you see the day of the Lord coming nearer" (Hebrews 10:24-25).   Dear Gordon: "In 1980 you came and spoke at my church in Oakville, Ontario (St Hilda's Anglican Church) ... I remember that evening because it was a turning point in many people's lives, the church, and in my own life.

The Holy Spirit Helps Us to Understand the Scriptures The main reason people visit the Holy Land is because Jesus was born there. Jesus grew up in the fishing village of Nazareth (Matt. 2:23) in the home of Joseph, a carpenter, who taught Him to be a carpenter as well. Jesus, the eldest of five brothers and two sisters (Matt. 13:55), attended the synagogue regularly and also accompanied His family to the Temple in Jerusalem (Lk. 2:52). Because He had an above average understanding of the Scriptures and of God; most people thought that He had gone away to study at a special religious school - He was so knowledgeable about God's

Witnessing to People About Jesus People who really know Jesus, have a deep desire for others to know Him as they do. They have no greater joy than sharing their faith with anyone who is open to listen.   This desire is part of a "normal" personal relationship with Jesus.    Jesus' "great commission" is to "go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation." But Jesus went on warning us that, "Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe, will be condemned" (Mark 16:15-16).  It is "normal" for a Christian who has a relationship with Jesus, to be excited about telling

God's Perfect Love While the world sees love as an emotion, God speaks of it as the embodiment of His essence. Perfect love is the unchangeable, unconditional, undying love of God.  "God is love [agape (ah-gah-paye) love]. (1 John 4:8; John 3:16)" There are four words for love in the Greek New Testament language: apape, eros, philos and storge. In English, there is only one word - love.  Perfect love is not eros (erotic love), nor is it philos (brotherly or friendship love), nor is it storge (family love). These kind of loves are imperfect, conditional and can be lost. God's love is perfect. No one

Achievement Awards - The Gifts of the Holy Spirit   The gifts of the Spirit are ministry gifts. The condition for receiving them is that a person must be born again and baptized in the Holy Spirit. No one can have any of the gifts without the giver, who is the Holy Spirit. While most people quote First Corinthians when listing the gifts, there are actually two lists, the other being found in the book of Romans.   First Corinthians 12:7—11 reads, "Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by

Obtain Everlasting Love, Peace and Joy   "There's something different about you," is hopefully the observation of a non-Christian addressing a Christian. Change is often impossible apart from God. Humans are so trapped by their habits and character flaws that, try as they will, few escape their destructive traits.   How, then, does one become like Jesus?   It's a supernatural process, a work of the Holy Spirit in us, accomplished through developing what Paul calls "the fruit of the Spirit” as outlined in Galatians Chapter 5, verses 22 to 23.   The "fruit of the Spirit" are: love joy

Growing in Peace and Self Control   "Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, and he began to teach them. He said: Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called

The Normal Christian Walk. A normal walk with Jesus involves experiencing daily, in our lives and churches, what we read about in the New Testament. Orderly, acceptable worship still requires manifestation of the gifts of the Holy Spirit, just as it did in the model established for us in the 14th chapter of 1st Corinthians: "All of these must be done for the strengthening of the Church" (vs. 26). It is abnormal to expect anything less. Throughout the centuries, people have tried to write off important aspects of the normal Christian life, calling the baptism and gifts of the Holy spirit a "passing phase" or

Waiting on the Holy Spirit. Some may think that "waiting on the Holy Spirit" is old-fashioned. Allowing the Holy Spirit to move in our lives means a relationship - listening to Him and acting like a trained cheetah, on command. That is what it takes for both a husband and wife if they want to be in unity in every issue that arises in a marriage. God brings people together as they submit to Him. It isn't about surrendering to one another - but to Jesus. He shows us God's plan for each situation, including children. They too, can love, forgive and encourage other children, and pray and minister for their

Why Must I Be Saved? Jesus made it clear that there is no alternative route to eternal life with God. He said, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but by me" (John 14:6). No matter how many routes other religions claim are available, Jesus declared that there is only one way - salvation through His shed blood. Salvation is a free gift. There is no age-limit nor sexual preference, no intelligence standards nor financial requirements; it can't be bought nor earned; and it is not guaranteed by church attendance any more than hanging around a garage guarantees that a person

Why Should I Want to be a Christian? People tend to feel most comfortable when they can put things into boxes. Attempting to categorize Christians as evangelical, charismatic, conservative, fundamentalist, liberal, or whatever serves to clarify the differences between Christians. Taking different corners within the general arena of Christianity - like Presbyterian, United, Baptist, Pentecostal etc. - is a very "natural" thing. However, that doesn't mean it's "normal" for people who have a relationship with Jesus. Unfortunately, in the Christian realm, what happens is people not only separate themselves into boxes with

Did I get the Holy Spirit when I got Saved? Whenever such questions arise, it is necessary to go straight to Scripture for the answer. Acts 19:1-6 details an encounter Paul had with some disciples who had received salvation but had not received the Holy Spirit. "Paul took the road through the interior and arrived at Ephesus. There he found some disciples and asked them, 'Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?' They answered, 'No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.' So Paul asked, 'Then what baptism did you receive?' 'John's baptism,' they replied. Paul said,

Tasting the New Wine Jesus tells us that when a person has been forgiven of sin at the time of salvation, he or she is made into a "new wine skin" into which the "new wine" of the Holy Spirit must be poured.  "Neither is new wine put into old wineskins; if it is, the skins burst, and the wine is spilled, and the skins are destroyed; but the new wine (the baptism of the Holy Spirit) is put into fresh wineskins, and so both are preserved" (Matthew 9:17). "And no one after drinking old wine desires new; for he says, "The old is good" [Greek: chrestos: better] (Luke 5:39). The Holy Spirit starts what I
