Mother's Day Honours Wives and Mothers
GWEA Monthly Message, May 2019
REVEREND GORDON WILLIAMS
Mother’s day arrives on Sunday, May 12th. It is an wonderful opportunity to honour our wives and mothers as Jesus had intended us to. "Husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself" (Eph. 5:28). The scriptures command "husbands to love their wives just as Christ loved the church and gave Himself for her to make her holy... and blameless” (Eph. 5:25-27). This can only be accomplished when God's "agape love" is poured into our hearts through the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. (Rom. 5:5)

In the Bible there are four different Greek words for the word "love.” They are: friendship (philos), eros (sexual), family (storge) and agape (God’s perfect love). The first three are referred to as conditional loves, where "agape love" is unconditional love. Jesus said, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is first and greatest commandment. And ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself’" (Matt. 22:37-39). "Agape" love empowers and extends the boundaries of all other loves. Philos, eros and family loves limit a person to forgiving a person to only 7 times a day, where apape love exceeds these 3 loves by 490 times a day (Matt. 18:21-22). God's divine, agape love unleashes and enhances the other loves; it guarantees them, it never degrades a person, it builds them up; and it keeps no record of wrongs (1 Cor. 13:5). “God demonstrates his own love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8).

Paul said, "Honour your father and mother which is the first commandment with a promise" (Deut. 5:16; Eph. 6:2). Children are to honour their fathers and mothers that it may be well with them and that they may live long on the earth (Eph. 6:2-3). Paul defined agape love when he wrote, "Love is patient and kind; love is not jealous or boastful; it is not arrogant or rude. It is not irritable or resentful; it keeps no records of wrongs but rejoices in the right. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things" (1 Cor. 13:4– 8). If we are to love with God's agape love, it can only come from receiving the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. It is the love that “has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us” (Rom. 5:5; Gal. 5:22).

Paul tells us that our homes are mini-churches (Eph. 5:32) where we can learn to do the ministry of the Holy Spirit by praying in the Spirit (Eph. 6:18) and using the Gifts of the Holy Spirit each day. When guided by spirit-led mothers, families can grow together. It is because of such mothers and wives, "that you may prosper and be in good health, even as your soul prospers” (3 Jn. 2). It can be said of Christian women, that "the hand that rocks the cradle rules the world,” which is a line from a famous poem by William Ross Wallace. This coming Mother's day, let us honour our mothers and wives and give them our special attention by a dinner out, giving flowers, chocolates, a card of appreciation... anything that honours her. In every case, be sure to "Bless your Mother with loving kindness!"

If you have not received the Baptism of the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues, I invite you come to one of our house meetings or to contact me for prayer and guidance. If you have a prayer request or praise report, please contact me so we can pray for you!
